Housing
The University of Toronto guarantees residence to all first year
students. In order to secure your spot, you must indicate on the OUAC application form
that you would like to receive more information on residence. Although
this guarantees you a place in residence, you can later choose upon
receiving your offer to decline to live on campus.
There are a wide variety of residences at our
downtown campus, from the historic Sir Daniel Wilson Residence, to
modern highrises like Woodsworth College Residence. Follow the links
below to find out more about the various residences available on
campus.
The closest residences, within a 5 – 10 minute
walk, are New College , University College and Innis College. However,
St. Michael's College, Victoria College, Lorretto College and Trinity
College residences are only about a 15-minute walk. 89 Chestnut is
about 20 minutes walking, or a quick trip on the subway.
To find out more about both residence as well as
off-campus housing, visit the Student Housing Service.
Important Information for students selecting a
residence:
Ranking your Choices of Residence
It is important to be realistic about your chances of getting into a
residence. When selecting your top choice of residence, it is better to
put a residence where you have a chance of being admitted. If a
residence has a very limited number of spaces for Engineering students
or requires a high academic average, it might not be your best choice.
Residences prefer to offer residence to students who rank them #1. If
you choose realistically, you are more likely to get your #1 residence.
For instance, many students are attracted to the single rooms offered
by Innis College. However, in 2005, Innis only offered residence spots
to students with 95% and above.
The residences that offer 15 spots or less use a
variety of tools in selecting their students. If you are interested in
living in one of these places, it is best to get in touch with these
residences personally.
In contrast, New College, St. Michael's College
and 89 Chestnut will accomodate all students who select their residence
as a first choice.
What the Heck is a "College"?
As an engineering student, you may be wondering why all the residences
are connected to a college. The "college system" is for Arts &
Science students at the University of Toronto. It is a convenient way
to register students and include them in a university community. As an
engineering student, you may live in a residence affiliated with a
college, but will not be a member of the college. The Faculty of
Applied Science and Engineering acts as your college, offering you
academic counseling
, social activities, school government and more.
