Areas of Research

Research activities focus primarily on bio-oriented micro and nanosystems. The actively pursued areas are MEMS/NEMS (micro-nanoelectromechanical systems) sensor and actuator design and fabrication; microrobotic biomanipulation; nanomanipulation and nanoassembly; and biomechanics. My group develops innovative systems/devices and techniques with which we tackle fundamental and applied biological, biomedical, and emerging engineering problems. Our research skills include micro/nano device design, fabrication, and testing; micro-nanorobotic manipulation; computer vision microscopy; pN force sensing; cellular biomechanics; and electro/mechanical characterization of biomaterials and nanomaterials.

Prof. Sun is jointly appointed in the Inst. of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering and in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
