Teaching Assistantships

The Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (MIE)
Department hires a number of graduate students to assist its academic
staff in teaching courses. Typical duties might include
demonstrating laboratory experiments, conducting problem-solving
sessions, and marking of problem sets, quizzes or term tests.
These positions are normally available only to students who are officially
registered in a full-time degree program
at the University of Toronto. Students should normally be
attending the University before any TA application procedure will be
initiated. Information about the available positions is posted a
few months before each term begins. Applications for the
positions are accepted up to the posted deadline. The
announcements are placed on the graduate notice board, in the
departmental newsletter, MIExpress, and sent by e-mail to all
registered students in the department.
Teaching Assistants are then chosen from the applications
submitted. Terms of employment are set out in a Collective
Agreement between the Canadian Union Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3902
and the Governing Council of the University of Toronto, a copy of which
is available to each Teaching Assistant hired. Copies are also
available in the Graduate Office. All first-time assistants must
attend a workshop held shortly after Labour Day in September. All
teaching assistants must be available to meet with the course
instructor by the first day of the academic term.
All TA positions are selected by an Associate Chair of the
department. One of the factors that influence the selection
process is the recommendations of each course instructor. TA
applicants are encouraged to contact the relevant course instructors to
make them aware of the student's interest in being a TA, and to
describe the students credentials for being a TA.
