Scholarships and Fellowships

Canadian citizens and permanent residents are
eligible for federal scholarships (NSERC) and provincial scholarships
(OGS). OGS also accepts applications from visa students with
outstanding academic records. Applications for federal and
provincial scholarships for the academic year beginning in September
must be submitted in the Fall of the previous year. The
Department will issue application instructions to currently-enrolled
students in September.
The federal granting agencies have
announced a new program in
fall 2008: the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships which are valued at
$50,000 per annum and international students are eligible to apply.
All M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students who maintain
satisfactory academic
performance are eligible for University of Toronto Fellowships and
other financial awards. These fellowships are not awarded beyond
the second year of the M.A.Sc. program and not beyond the fourth year
of the Ph.D. program. New students are informed of their
multi-year support package in their offer of admission.
Students who are enrolled in a degree program should regularly read the
departmental newsletter, MIExpress, for announcements of award
competitions. These announcements contain important information
about eligibility, application procedures and deadlines for submitting
applications. Students who miss these deadlines will be
ineligible for fellowships and awards.
Departmental policies for awarding fellowships are modified annually to
reflect the effects of inflation and Faculty policies. For most
students, financial support will be sufficient to cover all academic
fees, plus a monthly stipend sufficient to cover the student's living
expenses. Students with government scholarships such as NSERC or
OGS, are eligible for Top-Up Awards.
Students requiring additional funds are encouraged to apply for Teaching Assistantship positions.
