Glynn Williams - Creating a Permanent Legacy of Leadership

Glynn Willams is one of the most distinguished and accomplished graduates of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.  Since receiving his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science in 1978, his M.A.Sc. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1980 and subsequently, his MBA from U of T's School of Management in 1991, Mr. Williams became a founder and managing director of Newcrest Capital Inc. until it was sold to TD Securities in Fall 2000.  Currently he is Chairman and CEO of Reliance Aerotech Inc., a company that provides maintenance, repair and overhaul services to North America's growing regional commercial aviation markets.

As one of the University of Toronto's foremost volunteers, Glynn Williams has dedicated his time and expertise to assisting his alma mater, serving on the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering's Campaign Cabinet and Dean's Advisory Board.  He is also a member of the University's Group of 175, which consists of the 175 premier volunteers and benefactors working in support of the current Campaign for the University of Toronto.

Few individuals have proven themselves as dedicated as Mr. Williams in helping U of T's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering fulfill its vision of emerging as one of the World's top engineering schools.  Through the establishment of the Glynn Williams Fellowship. Mr. Williams has created a permanent endowment to reward those students who show the most promise in continuing the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering's outstanding legacy of leadership.

The Glynn Williams Fellowship - Rewarding Excellence

All eligible candidates will be considered automatically for this award.  The University of Toronto Glynn Williams Fellowship will enable the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Mr. Williams' own department, to provide outstanding support to its most qualified and promising doctoral candidates.  The fellowship will be awarded to one student each year beginning their Ph.D. degree within the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.  Valued at $25,000, the University of Toronto Glynn Williams Fellowship is the most generous award offered by the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, and will provide the recipient with the necessary funding to reach his/her potential.  Eligibility is restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.

The University of Toronto Glynn Williams Fellowship recipient will be selected each year from the pool of applicants to the doctoral program within the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.  Successful applicants will be expected to possess outstanding academic credentials, references and leadership qualities.  In addition, fellowship recipients will be able to show that their research has potential for commercial applications that could be of benefit to Canadians.

How to Apply

In order to be eligible for the University of Toronto Glynn Williams Fellowship, candidates must submit an application for entry into the doctoral program of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Applications to the doctoral program will contain the following information and documentation, which will be used in selecting fellowship winners:

  • Official transcripts of the student's entire university career;
  • Three letters of recommendation from professors or research associates who have followed the candidates progress during their university studies, the referees should also specifically address the candidate's leadership qualities;
  • An updated resume, including evidence of leadership;
  • A rationale for their choice of the research field or discipline that the student plans to pursue during the course of doctoral studies;
