Admission Requirements and Application Procedure
for Prospective Students
Please read through the admission requirements and
application deadlines first before proceeding to the application
instructions at the bottom of this page.
Please note that ADMI
applications are accepted ONLY from Canadian citizens and permanent
residents

General
Admission Requirements
1.
Academic Requirement:
Masters-level applicants: A
minimum of B+ (78-80%) academic standing in the last two years of a
four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited Canadian university
or its equivalent.
PhD applicants: A minimum
of B+ (78-80%) academic standing in a Masters degree from an accredited
Canadian University or its equivalent.
Although a Ph.D. candidate will normally hold a Master's degree, it is
possible for a Master's candidate to transfer registration directly to
a Ph.D. program without completing the Master's program.
Exceptionally strong students may apply to transfer directly to a Ph.D.
program from a M.A.Sc. program, without first completing all of the
M.A.Sc. degree requirements, by fast-tracking. Information on
this option is available in our Degree
Regulations section.
Applicants whose degrees were obtained
outside North America should check the SGS
Admission Requirements website. The
International Degree Equivalencies Chart will help you assess
whether you are eligible for entry into one of our graduate
programs. Please note that although the minimum grades listed are
equivalent to a mid-B grade, MIE has a minimum requirement of B+.

2. English
Language Proficiency
Requirement:
All
applicants holding degrees from universities
in countries in which the official language is not English are required
to submit
official evidence of English language proficiency.
This
requirement applies to
applicants from, but not limited to, Bangladesh,
Burma, Nepal, India,
Pakistan, Latin America, Iran, the Middle East, Israel, the People's
Republic of China, Taiwan,
Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, most European countries,
and non-English-speaking countries in Africa.
Applicants
may not use Language of Instruction to waive the English language
proficiency
requirement. Partial completion of a degree
in a country where the official language is English is also not
sufficient to
waive the English language proficiency requirement.
This requirement should be met at
the time of application. We will NOT offer admission to
applicants who do not meet the English language proficiency
requirement.
If you have previously been denied admission to the University of
Toronto on the basis of your English language proficiency, you must
submit new test scores that meet the current minimum from one of the
standardized tests.
You may demonstrate your facility in English using one of the following
methods:
Test of English
as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Required scores: 237 Computer-based (or 580
Paper-based) and TWE 4.0
Test of
English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) - INTERNET-BASED TEST (iBT)
Required scores: MINIMUM 22/30 for Writing AND 22/30 for Speaking AND
OVERALL TOEFL score 93/120
NOTE: ALL
parts of the TOEFL iBT requirements as above should be met on the SAME
test. For example, if you achieve an overall score of 93 or
above, but do not achieve a minimum of 22/30 in either Writing or
Speaking, your scores will NOT be accepted as proof of English language
proficiency.
Michigan English
Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
Required Score: 85
International
English Language Testing System (IELTS - Academic Module)
Required Score: 7.0
The
Certificate of Proficiency in English(COPE)
Required Score: 86
(writing = 32, reading = 22, listening = 22)
Equivalency
comparison based on previous COPE scoring system:
00
– 21 (Level 0); 22 – 31
(Level 1); 32 – 45 (Level 2); 46 – 60 (Level 3)
UofT
School of Continuing Studies Academic Preparation Course
Required Score: a final grade of B in Level
60
Important Note: The University of Toronto does not have the resources
to admit all qualified applicants - meeting the minimum requirements
does NOT guarantee admission. The application process
requires considerable amounts of your time and some expense in terms of
a non-refundable application fee. We therefore encourage you to
consider carefully before submitting an application. The
application package and fee will not be returned to unsuccessful
applicants. The University does not provide free preliminary
assessments of credentials.

It is applicants' responsibility to ensure they meet the minimum
admission requirements and follow the correct instructions.

- Applicants must submit an online application
using the School of Graduate

applicant profile, the SGS Admissions Application website will prompt
you to make arrangements for payment of the application fee. You may
pay the application fee on-line or off-line. The fee is payable on-line
by credit card, or off-line by credit card, certified cheque or money
order. Cheques and money orders should be made payable to the

identification number and a password will be emailed to you. You can
leave and return to your application at any point until you move to the
payment stage. At that point you can return to check on the status of
this application including whether we have received your supporting
documents.
- Payment of your application fee must be
received by the School of Graduate Studies before we will consider your
application. You may pay online by VISA or Mastercard. This payment
method is secure as the transaction is handled by Mirapay, a third
party authorized by VISA and Mastercard. Mirapay provides the School of
Graduate Studies with payment confirmation only. SGS and the University
of Toronto will not have access to your credit card information. Please
note that the process requires that popup blockers on your web browser
be disabled.
- IMPORTANT NOTE:
The application
fee is non-refundable, regardless of the circumstances.
The application fee cannot be transferred to other applications and
will not be returned even if you do not complete the rest of the
application process. Each application (to different Start Date /
Graduate Unit / Program Type) requires a separate application fee be
paid. When you are completing the SGS application, you must
ensure that you have selected the correct Start Date, Graduate Unit,
Program Type, Attendance Type, Program/Degree and Collaborative Program
(if applicable). If you incorrectly enter this information and
pay the application fee, you cannot request a refund or a change to
your application - you would have to submit a new application with the
