Computing Facilities

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has set up an advisory committee to help maintain a strong computer network for graduate research. The department employs full-time computer specialists who are in charge of maintaining the integrity of the system, installation and repair of equipment, and responding to user problems. The department is continuously upgrading the network infrastructure in order to accommodate the department's expanding needs and future technology.

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering has continued to respond to the growing importance of computers with an excellent array of computing equipment for both teaching and research purposes. The latest technology is provided in a network of Unix workstations and servers. Several workstations and terminals attached to central servers provide high level graphics capabilities. The central servers are also available for computational tasks, document processing, electronic news and electronic mail service. Sharing disk storage, laser printers, tape drives, etc., these computing systems are made available to both undergraduates and graduate students; in practice, undergraduates do the bulk of their work on a faculty-wide undergraduate system, the Engineering Computing Facility (ECF). Several software packages are available, including I-DEAS, ANSYS, LaTeX, XEmacs, MATLAB, StarOffice, MAPLE, C, C++, FORTRAN and Pascal compilers, in addition to numerous general-purpose utilities.

The departmental network is connected to the University backbone through a fast-ethernet connection (100 Megabits per second), providing fast internet access to all computers in the department. The University also provides dialin modem access to all faculty, staff and students through the UTORdial system.

In addition to departmental research computers, numerous research laboratories have dedicated computer systems as well. In all, there are hundreds of interlinked computer systems with more than 500 workstations and terminals connected to the central computing facilities.

In addition to the computing machines, the Department has established good communication links with the Engineering Computing Facility (ECF). The service provided by the ECF is primarily for teaching, but may also be used for research activities as required. Beyond the facilities of the Faculty is the University's central Computing Services (UTCS).
